Dr. Matthew Benedick, Associate Veterinarian
Dr. Benedick was born in the Washington DC area and has returned to the area, joining the team at Falls Road Veterinary Hospital in the summer of 2011, after graduating with his DVM from the VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. From an early age he has always enjoyed animals and the companionship they provide. Dr. Benedick majored in psychology and minored in Spanish as an undergraduate at the University of Maryland, College Park. Additionally, undergraduate research work in the areas of animal neuro- and biopsychology reinforced his drive to become a veterinarian. His particular areas of interest include anesthesia and pain management, internal medicine, as well as emergency. Having done work with physical therapy and rehabilitation at VA-MD he hopes to incorporate some of these services into those offered at Falls Road Veterinary Hospital.
In addition to his interest and training in medicine, Dr. Benedick also has a strong interest in dog training and behavior modification. He underwent several weeks of concentrated study to earn the certification as a CPT (Certified Professional Trainer). Dogs bring so much to our lives in the way of companionship, support and love and one of the best ways to enhance this relationship with our pets is through proper training and behavior principles. He has endorsements in Basic and Advanced Obedience, Puppy Development, Behavior Modification (for shy, aggressive, and other behavior issues), and Breed Identification, and believes that medicine and training go hand in hand – both being required for the optimal health of the dog as well as maximizing the relationship between pet and owner.
Dr. Benedick and his wonderful fiancé, Amy enjoy being outdoors, hiking, kayaking, and climbing. They also are involved in graphic art and design. Having 11 siblings between the two of them, they appreciate being close to, and spending time with, family and friends in the greater Washington DC area.
